CHAPTER 10
Going for a ride in the back of an unmarked police car was not on my 'things to do' list for the evening before graduating law school. I had been expecting to spend time with my family before I headed off to Atlanta and this excursion was seriously eating into it.
In all fairness, Martin had planned to spend some quality time with his family, too. He wasn't merely inconvenienced by a couple of questions; he was in police custody and enjoying a tiny room with a seating choice of a cot or a stainless-steel commode.
I had no idea what had happened to Penny. But it was impossible for me to believe Martin capable of doing anything illegal. Heck, he would have found Penny hours earlier if I hadn't convinced him not to pound on her door when she wasn't responding on her smartphone.
Even as I replayed the details of the night that Penny died through my head, I still wasn't sure what course of action Martin and I should have taken. It seemed like one of those impossible situations where any action you choose would be wrong.
The detectives led me into a room just off the front counter of the precinct. Detective Green motioned for me to sit.
"Would you like a water or a cola?"
"Not right now. But thank you for asking." I sat, and Detective Green did the same. Cunningham seemed content to lean against the wall. I guessed he was afraid any standard chair would buckle under his weight.
"Ms. Snow, how long have you known Martin Culp?"
"Three years."
"Would you say during that time that Martin Culp was a good friend?"
"I consider him my best friend."
Green scribbled something down in his notebook. "You two shared secrets?"
Secrets? "If you mean we talked, yes."
"I mean talked about things that you didn't talk to other people about."
"I suppose both of us had times that we told the other something and then never told anybody else if that's what you're getting at."
Green shook his head. "I'm not getting at anything, Ms. Snow. I'm just asking some straightforward questions and would expect direct answers in return."
And here I was starting to like detective Green. "Just for the record, your direct question sounds a lot like a leading question."
Cunningham shoved off the wall. "And your answers sound evasive."
Oh, he hasn't seen evasive yet. I gave Cunningham my best 'burst into flames and die a painful death stare.â
"Ms. Snow, understand, we want to help your friend too," Detective Green continued.
"Really? Because back at my house it sounded like y'all were convinced that he was going away for life."
"I'm not going to understate the importance of getting to the truth. Penny Trickett deserves justice."
My eyebrows jerked upward. "Justice? How about justice for an innocent man? And let me remind you that every minute you spend trying to put Martin in jail is more time for Penny's killer to make a getaway."
"Why are you so sure that Culp is innocent? Has he promised you something in return?" Cunningham questioned.
